What happens if you fail a class at OSU? ›

Ohio State offers an academic policy called the Grade Forgiveness Rule. Under this rule, students can petition to complete a second attempt at a course and, once completed, remove the grade of the first attempt from their OSU GPA calculation.

Note: Ohio State does not offer the grades of A+ or D-. Students earn no points for an E, or grades of EN or NEN (which indicate students stopped attending the class), but the hours for these marks are calculated into the cumulative grade point average.

Generally, it's better to drop a class than to fail it, as long as you can maintain a full-time course load without it.

The Student Experience. Let's start with some basic information about the College of Engineering (COE). Since fall 2013, the average acceptance rate for COE is 83.4%.

The acceptance rate at Ohio State University is 52.7%.

This means the school is moderately selective. The school expects you to meet their requirements for GPA and SAT/ACT scores, but they're more flexible than other schools. If you exceed their requirements, you have an excellent chance of getting in.

However, the Grade Forgiveness Rule allows undergraduate students to petition to repeat up to three courses under a different arrangement: the grade in the repeated course will permanently replace the original grade for the course in the calculation of the student's cumulative GPA.

Failing one or more classes could result in academic probation or suspension, depending on your school's policy or the requirements for your major. Most schools place students on academic probation if they fall below a minimum 2.0 GPA at the end of any semester.

Failed classes count toward your GPA, though some colleges do not count pass/fail classes in your GPA calculation. If you get an F, you still have to pay for the class without receiving any credit toward your degree. What's more, failed classes don't count toward graduation requirements either.

Can I still graduate if I fail a class in college? ›

It's important not to panic, as there are usually options available to students who fail a class. In most cases, you can still graduate on time, but you may need to put in extra effort to make up for the failed class during your senior year or by taking summer school.
