How do you diagnose a bad fuse box? ›

The main fuse box is typically located under the hood, while secondary fuse panels might be inside the car, often near the dashboard or steering wheel. The fuse's wire conductor breaks when the current exceeds the ampere limit, which manufacturers usually define along with different color codes on each fuse.

Your fuse box will have two sets of fuses. At the bottom will be 15-amp and 20-amp screw-in fuses with glass faces that are exposed and visible. These fuses will service branch light circuits and outlet circuits. At the top will be 30-amp or 40-amp cartridge main fuses for ovens, laundry rooms, or stoves.

Your current fuse box is getting old – If your lights keep flickering or your sockets do not seem to be working as well as they should, then this is a sure sign that your fuse box is beginning to deteriorate. This often starts when the fuse box is over ten years old.

Listening for a Clicking Sound

As the circuit is completed, the relay should make an audible click that indicates that the electromagnet is working and is completing the circuit. If the relay doesn't make an audible click, it might mean that the relay has stopped working and isn't completing the circuit.

The most likely blown car fuse symptoms are related to electrical functions not working at all. That's almost always one specific system affected, with acute signs like: Power door locks not cycling. One or more power windows not going up or down.

The secondary under-hood fuse box is next to the battery. To open it, push the tabs as shown. If something electrical in your vehicle stops working, check for a blown fuse first. Determine from the chart on pages and , or the diagram on the fuse box lid, which fuse or fuses control that device.

Generally the manufacturer's brand name and the actual part number should be enough to identify the right fuse.

Understanding the Fuse Box Anatomy

If it's a breaker panel, you'll see columns of circuit breaker switches with levers marked ON/OFF. Whenever the breaker trips, it falls back to the 'OFF' side, so you'll simply flip it back to 'ON'. For a fuse panel, you'll basically have a column of fuses lying side by side.

A switched fuse is one that only has power when the ignition is turned on, while a constant fuse always has power.

Open the fuse box and look at the glass containers that hold the fuses. If you can see that the fuse is visibly broken, or there is metallic residue on the glass from the fuse blowing, you will need to replace that particular fuse. Always turn your power off before replacing a fuse.

Most vehicles have two fuse boxes, with one under the hood and the other in the cabin. You can usually find the other fuse box in the dashboard on the driver's side, but some manufacturers also place it below the glove box. If the interior fuse box isn't there, you can try checking the luggage compartment.

The thin metal strip breaks apart when the fuse blows, terminating the electrical connection. Sometimes, the metal strip will also melt and discolor the glass window. If that happens, you might notice a burnt smell when you approach the fuse box, also known as an electrical panel.
